He was instrumental in setting up the first HIV/AIDS clinic in Boston, and in the mid-1980s in Senegal, he was part of the team of Senegalese, French, and American researchers who discovered evidence for and then studied the disease outcomes of the second type of human AIDS virus, HIV-2. Previously at Harvard, Marlink helped create two partnerships with the government of Botswana: the 1996 Botswana-Harvard Partnership with the Harvard AIDS Initiative, where he was executive director, and the African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships, a public-private partnership with the government of Botswana that was launched in 2000 with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates and Merck foundations. Also in 2000, Marlink founded the Kitso AIDS Training Program, which would become Botswana’s national AIDS training program. Kitso means “knowledge” in the local Setswana language. Since 2000, programs he has created and/or led have trained tens of thousands of health care workers and helped establish national programs on the care, treatment, and prevention of HIV/AIDS in several African countries. Following the 2003 launch of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to combat global HIV/AIDS, the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease in history, Marlink was Botswana’s country director for the Botswana-Harvard PEPFAR effort. In addition, while serving as scientific director and vice president for implementation at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, he was principal investigator of Project HEART, another PEPFAR Track 1.0 effort in five African countries. Project HEART began in 2004 and by 2011 had placed more than one million people living with HIV into clinical care sites in Cote d’Ivoire, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia. Robert Van Varick

Principal, Design, Insights & Strategy, Michael Graves

With the firm since 2003, Rob passionately believes design has the power to positively impact people’s lives. His mission is to apply the right blend of research, psychology, creativity and strategy so that root causes are identified, allowing the best solution to be designed. Well-rounded solutions require multi-disciplinary input and collaboration. As a partner at MGA&D, Rob works with architects, interior designers, product designers, graphic designers, researchers and strategists all focused on one goal: enhancing the human experience at every scale. Great design is humanistic, familiar, accessible and intuitive. Today, everyone is focused on “innovation,” but many companies are pursuing innovation that is disconnected from users. For MG, success starts with the observation of an unmet need or opportunity gap. But that’s only the start. The true key, which they call the magic, is translating the observation into a meaningful and enduring product solution. That’s the hard part.

            [post_title] => Richard Marlink
[post_excerpt] => Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, Dr. Marlink, MD, has worked to establish HIV/AIDS research, training, and clinical care programs in the United States and abroad.

Marlink was the principal investigator for “The Tshepo Study,” the first large-scale antiretroviral treatment study in southern Africa, funded by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation’s Secure the Future initiative. His research in the region also includes clinical and epidemiological evaluations to help determine how antiretroviral treatment and national treatment programs can best be accomplished in Africa.

More than 565,000 were placed on life-saving antiretroviral treatment.

That region’s low rate of startup formation prompted him to launch not for profit Upstate Venture Connect in 2010 helping high growth company founders connect with people and resources needed for success.

UVC’s organically built network of more than 17,000 people have helped accelerate startup formation, funding and growth across a broad geography encompassing 7 metro areas.

In 2018 he founded non profit Entrepreneurs Across Borders to identify, curate and connect emerging entrepreneurs in impoverished areas with resources needed to create jobs, sustainable livelihoods and equitable growth, beginning with Jamaica as the pilot country.

In addition to not for profit leadership and serving on TriNet’s Board, Mr. Babinec is Founder/Managing Director of UpVentures Capital and Co-Founder/Chairman of StartFast Venture Accelerator which together have combined for more than 75 seed stage investments in emerging technology companies.

He is a graduate of Shippensburg University and past recipient of SVBJ Silicon Valley Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

[post_excerpt] => With the firm since 2003, Rob passionately believes design has the power to positively impact people’s lives.

Testimonials

(from a few of the 300+ students who completed full day, week-long intensive summer program)

I was one of the students who is taking part in the GEE camp. I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I learned so many new things when it comes to leadership, collaboration, teamwork, STEM, etiquette, social entrepreneurship, and so much more. The speakers that you brought in truly allowed me to take a deeper look inside those topics. I am excited to continue learning about entrepreneurship, and hopefully, one day, be able to call myself an entrepreneur. These few days have been nothing but amazing and I just wanted to let you know how thankful I am for being part of this program. Thank you. - M. J.

I was a student at GEE this week, and it was truly a blessing to have been able to listen to all of the fantastic speakers. All of their different stories impacted me in different ways, but one thing they all had in common was that they never gave up. I will take all of the tips and tricks, motivating quotes, and notes that I have in my notebook, and will not let any of them go to waste in my entrepreneurial future, and my future in general. I highly recommend this class to anyone! As the speakers said, an entrepreneurial mindset can be used in any aspect of life, not just business. Thank you! - M. L.

The GEE camp was a great experience. The speakers were very informative, inspiring and motivating. Also thanks to Stephanie Bousheri as she was a great coach! - J.D.

Thank you so much for this amazing and extremely insightful week. I feel like I learned a lot about what is necessary to be an entrepreneur. All the speakers were very inspiring and helpful with their advice. I truly feel inspired to be an entrepreneur. - D. L.

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for the last week. I had a great time learning and having fun at the same time. All the speakers were great, and the subgroups were even more enjoyable. It was a terrific experience for me, and I am so glad I did it. I have begun thinking of things in more entrepreneurial ways I had never imagined before. Thank you! - J. C.

Thank you for the great week at GEE. I've learned extremely valuable advice from successful entrepreneurs that I will take with me in the future. I look forward to the opportunities ahead and I highly recommend this program to aspiring entrepreneurs. - A. L.
